Finally our first London post! NYC may be the ultimate pizza haven (even more so than Italy itself!) but London has come up with some serious contenders. Below are 3 that we consider the top picks… [Shails]
This place in Shoreditch is always packed and buzzing, a reservation is highly recommended! They offer delicious brick oven pizza with a slightly blackened crust which is crunchy yet still chewy. Toppings are tasty and often unusual, menu changes seasonally – have tried the Buffalo Mozzarella and the Aubergine & Smoked Mozzarella which were both very tasty and have heard other fellow diners rave about the Salami and Spicy Sausage combos. The pizzas here are definitely plenty for 1 person or get a few for the table to share if you want to try some of the appetisers and salads – highlights including the Burrata, Fig and Honeycomb Bruschetta and the Butter lettuce, Avocado salad.
This place reminds me the most of NYC – traditional Neapolitan sourdough pizzas, San Marzano tomatoes, Mozzarella shipped in from Italy! A solid Margherita – just the right amount of tomato sauce and white mozzarella melted perfectly into the top, looks as well as tasted perfect. The owners’ journey through Italy to find the perfect pizza is quite impressive and hats off to them! A brick & mortar location in Soho and a Pizza food truck which changes locations.
This tiny hole in the wall in Ealing is a bit more on the suburbs but definitely worth the journey. The imported wood fired oven from Italy makes the difference to their traditional Neapolitan style pizzas. I am not a crust person but these are crispy, chewy and moreish and I finished them all! One pizza per person is more than plenty if you are hungry! The Santa Margherita a classic favourite and The San Mattia (buffalo mozzarella, mushrooms & truffle oil) is deliciously rich and satisfying. They sometimes go heavy on the tomato sauce base so just ask for a little less if you prefer. No reservations and limited seats so go early!
